Surprise! Surprise! by Niki Daly

Tafelberg 32 pages R149 at

Ithink this is one of four-year-old Lathi’s favourite books of all time. The morning after I first read it to her, I was greeted by a yell, “Surprise!”

I was, in fact, pretty surprised, and didn’t know what she was talking about. I thought she wanted to show me something, and she did – the book by Niki Daly that had captured her imagination.

She loves the first two picture pages and describing exactly what Potter the pig is doing – Potter is playing, or drawing, or eating ice cream. She likes Potter’s bedroom set-up which is almost like ours, with a radio on the side drawers. She particularly loves the part where Mr Tati wishes on a falling star and then goes shopping for a baby for Mrs Tati. Every time Lathi asks why Mr Tati is in a baby shop, I realise that, one day, I will have to tackle the issue of where babies come from.

This is a funny book. I know because Lathi always laughs when Potter tries to go to school – imagine a pig going to school. She has even learnt that pigs have two toes and fingers instead of 10.

She really loves the ending where Mr and Mrs Tati turn into pigs themselves. She saves her biggest laugh for that bit.

Weeks later, she still always asks for Surprise! Surprise! when it’s reading time and she remembers all the characters in the book.
