“Tell no lies; claim no easy vic­to­ries.” This is the mantra ap­pro­pri­ated by po­lit­i­cal elites from late west African leader Amil­car Cabral. He said it to ex­hort free­dom fight­ers, but our MPs use it to slay each other.

On Thurs­day, ANC MP and deputy min­is­ter Buti Manamela tried to high­light the achieve­ments of the ANC govern­ment, say­ing there were now 900 000 univer­sity en­rol­ments, mostly by black stu­dents – un­like in 1976, when there were fewer than 100 black stu­dents. But EFF MPs re­torted that in 1976, there were 350 stu­dents at the Univer­sity of the North (now Lim­popo Univer­sity).
