TV darling Jessica Nkosi has gone back to where her career started: the theatre.

Nkosi, who portrays Qondi on Mzansi Magic’s telenovela Isibaya, stars in her first professional gospel music production. The show, Maria: The Story of the Son of God, premiered at Carnival City yesterday.

Nkosi reveals her singing talent in playing the lead. She performs alongside actor and musician Brian Temba, who portrays Jesus.

Although the 27-year-old studied drama and did a few theatre productions at university, she admitted to feeling nervous about returning to the stage.

“I didn’t know whether I could project my voice [appropriately] again because on camera you have to tone it down; you can’t overact,” she said.

Her publicist, Sarit Tomlinson, praised Nkosi’s singing and dancing skills.

Nkosi recently posted a short video on Instagram of a rehearsal before her appearance on the Lip Sync Battle Africa show on MTV Base. But, she insists, “I am an actress, so no albums from me.”

Zanele Mbokazi, the founder of World Gospel Powerhouse, which produces the renowned Crown Gospel Music Awards, approached Nkosi, believing she would be perfect for the role of Maria and give a gracious portrayal.

Mbokazi said she felt the story of Maria and Jesus had not been told enough and wanted to remind people of the sacrifice Christ made for the world.

Nkosi admitted that playing Qondi had enabled her to portray Maria better. “Maria is royalty because she is carrying a king, and Qondi is a queen. They are both down-to-earth individuals who care about their community.”

Asked if she had met her ideal man yet, she blushed: “No. I haven’t met my businessman yet, but I want to get married one day and have kids.

“I am still single, but when I do find someone special, people will know by slight hints I will leave in pictures I post. But I won’t reveal his face,” she said.
