Earthly pursuits Fast and furious
In a week when mad US leader Donald Trump denigrated the poor, KwaZulu-Natal’s eThekwini mayor, Zandile Gumede, was gunning for the rich. Shamelessly, Trump said he would never appoint a poor person as an economic adviser. “I love all people, rich or poor, but in those particular positions I just don’t want a poor person.”
Addressing a meeting, Gumede took a dig at presidential hopeful and business tycoon Cyril Ramaphosa. “You should not vote for the rich to lead our movement because even the Bible said they will never see the kingdom of heaven.” Mineral Resources Minister and Gupta acolyte Mosebenzi Zwane claimed this week that stories written about him – based on the leaked emails showing how captured he was by the Gupta family – were unfair on him. He added that he believed that he was being targeted because he was black.
It took only two days after he made these remarks for Zwane to be chased out of a mining indaba in Mpumalanga by disgruntled locals.
Ironically, it was black people who booed and showed him the door.
After the disruption, Zwane claimed he was unfazed, saying the protests were part of a “festival of ideas”.
