Sundowns are through, United hang in there
After reaching the quarterfinals of the CAF Champions League, defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns will try to topple group leaders Espérance in the last group game on Saturday.
Both Sundowns and Espérance confirmed their spots in the last eight yesterday.
Sundowns defeated St George 1-0 in their penultimate Group C match in Ethiopia, while the Tunisians managed a 2-all draw with AS Vita in Kinshasa.
Downs’ Anthony Laffor scored the all-important goal in the 85th minute at Addis Ababa Stadium to give the Brazilians a much-needed victory.
The result, coupled with AS Vita’s draw, assured Sundowns of a quarterfinal place as St George cannot now overhaul them in second place.
Based on their head-to-head statistics over St George, it means the Brazilians are through to the knockout stages, even if they lose to the visiting Democratic Republic of Congo side.
The the sides played to a goalless draw in their opening game earlier and a Sundowns victory yesterday means Sundowns have one over the Ethiopians.
Both Vita and George are out of contention, meaning Espérance and Sundowns still need to decide who tops the group when they play their final group matches at the weekend.
Sundowns host AS Vita with Espérance at home to St George. Sundowns are a point behind the Tunisians and will be aiming for a top spot in their last game.
Meanwhile, SuperSport United played their fourth draw when they ended goalless against Horoya of Guinea in Conakry in the CAF Confederation Cup.
The draw kept United’s hopes of a place in the quarterfinals of the competition alive as they are second on the table – two points behind Horoya, who are on nine.
Third-placed TP Mazembe, who have six points, travel to Gabon for a date with CF Mounana this afternoon. A win for Mazembe will take them to the summit of the group, meaning the final matches at the weekend will determine the two teams going to the knockout stages.
United host Mounana, while Mazembe and Horoya will have to cancel one another out in the other game.
