Minnie gets married
The family of Quinton Jones came bearing gifts as a sign of intent to welcome TV personality Minnie Dlamini into the fold in Durban yesterday.
The 20 security guards at the exclusive umembeso ceremony ensured that gatecrashers and members of the media were kept at bay at the star’s family home in northern Durban.
The guest list brimmed with celebrities, who came to witness the ceremony between Dlamini and Jones, a photographer. The couple got engaged in December.
There were two big notice boards on the gate that said: “Strictly no weapons, camera, video, cellphone, photography [sic].”
This was not to be taken lightly as the guards walked around ensuring the rules were followed.
An umembeso is the giving of gifts to the bride’s family, including the bride’s mother, as a way of thanking her for raising her daughter.
The Jones family showered the Dlaminis with a sheep, blankets and clothes, and they gave Minnie’s mother a washing machine. The Dlaminis returned the favour by giving the Jones’ clothes and blankets.
Often, a list of gifts and their respective recipients is provided to the groom’s family beforehand.
The security was so tight that, every 20 minutes, guests were reminded not to take pictures or selfies because of the couple’s commitment to a contract giving exclusive rights to a TV station for the filming and broadcasting of the wedding. It is understood the couple raked in millions thanks to this deal.
City Press has learnt that Minnie’s Wedding Special will be broadcast on DStv and will be produced by the couple’s production company. Sunday World reports the couple requested R6 million in total, with R3 million going towards production and the rest for the sale of the exclusive rights.
Among the guests who attended the couple’s big day were Ukhozi FM’s Dudu Khoza, Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba’s wife Noma, Deputy Agriculture Minister Bheki Cele’s wife Thembeka, businesswoman Basetsana Kumalo, actress Jessica Nkosi, Idols SA judge Unathi Msengana, social blogger Khaya Dlanga, soccer legend Jimmy Tau and radio and TV personality Anele Mdoda.
Dlamini’s jewellery was designed by Jenna Clifford, who is known for her unique designs and superlative craftsmanship.
