Leading campaigners for Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to become president of the ANC have shifted into a different gear, focusing on eradicating a perception that support for her is equivalent to supporting President Jacob Zuma.

City Press has learnt that, following the bruising policy conference, supporters of Dlamini Zuma are still confident she will be crowned president at the December conference, but have decided that she must overcome the perception that she is Zuma’s proxy – without alienating his support base.

In Kimberley in the Northern Cape yesterday, Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini said it was “reactionary” to say that “if you elect Dlamini-Zuma, you are electing Zuma”.
