The new Rose­bank venue Bar Ber Black­sheep – yeah, that’s its ac­tual name – feels like a lit­tle bit of Mabo­neng trans­planted fur­ther north. Wher­ever one goes, though, there’s no es­cap­ing Joburg’s hip­ster vibes.

This week, the quirky bar-cum­bar­ber­shop hosted an in­ti­mate gath­er­ing of booze en­thu­si­asts, bar­tenders and a few in­flu­encers who came out to en­joy an evening with the award-win­ning Wood­ford Re­serve.

De­spite see­ing gin and brandy rise in pop­u­lar­ity in our bar cul­ture, it seems we are still a whiskey na­tion – in this case, the US va­ri­ety, bour­bon.

In­side this space, com­plete with loungers and mood light­ing, we par­took in an ex­clu­sive mas­ter­class and tast­ing ses­sion cu­rated by brand am­bas­sador Mar­son Stry­dom. Through­out the evening, we guests were treated to al­lur­ing aro­mas of ar­ti­sanal Wood­ford vari­ants, ac­com­pa­nied by mouth­wa­ter­ing canapés per­fectly paired with each bev­er­age. The high­light of the evening was an Old Fash­ioned cock­tail mix-off. An Old Fash­ioned is a sweet cit­rus and berry bour­bon cock­tail. A ver­i­ta­ble sci­ence lab of tools and in­stru­ments was brought out for us to play with. Guests were split into groups and taught the per­fect way to make an Old Fash­ioned right be­fore at­tempt­ing to make one our­selves. Wood­ford is push­ing the bour­bon life­style in South Africa, and with good rea­son. As the peo­ple’s bev­er­age, bour­bon takes the snob­bery out of sin­gle malt tip­pling.
