World renowned South African record producer Black Coffee added another three awards to his trophy cabinet after winning the Dance Music Awards – but unfortunately the event was nowhere near being spectacular.

While it is common in South Africa for events to start later than scheduled, the awards were delayed by almost an hour. Imagine if they were to be broadcast live!

The venue looked like a birthday party of a regular person even though it was the first annual awards for one of the leading genres in Mzansi.

Metro FM’s Moeti Tsiki, better known as Mo Flava, fought a losing battle as if the only one tasked to create a good vibe. To make matters worse, some big names were missing among the audience and not there to collect their souvenir. The absent star of the night, Black Coffee, was one.

The We dance again hitmaker was awarded for Best Male DJ, Best Producer and Remix of the Year for the Alicia Keys’ song In Common.

Vocalist queen Lady Zamar was also not in sight to take home her Best Female Artist award.

Babes Wodumo’s Wololo finally got the longawaited recognition it deserved, as she walked away with the best Best Kwaito/Gqom Record award.

US-based Lars Behrenroth was one of the international record producers who were present to honour the historic day. “This is the opportunity for us to take dance music as a community to the next level. We created these awards, let’s build from tonight and let’s show the world that we are serious about our [house music] industry,” Behrenroth said.

“You know when I heard of the thing [awards ceremony] I was like hang on a second, I didn’t know we don’t have the awards. I think it’s long overdue, but everything comes at the time it is meant to be.”

Winners were voted for online by the South African public.
