The bulbs and grasses in the Fairholme parterre gar­den have been ex­pertly se­lected for a suc­ces­sion of blooms through­out the year.

WIN­TER-FLOW­ER­ING BULBS Leu­co­jum aes­tivum and Hy­acinthoides non­scripta ‘Blue­bells’ SPRING-FLOW­ER­ING BULBS Sparaxis bulb­ifera, Wat­so­nia

meri­ana ‘Co­ral’, Tri­to­nia se­curig­era ‘Flame Freesia’ and T. dis­ticha, Dierama

tri­chorizum ‘An­gel’s Fish­ing Rod’, Ixia scil­laris and Glad­i­oli sp. SUMMERFLOWERING BULBS Mixed de­cid­u­ous aga­pan­thus such as ‘Graskop’, ‘Ly­den­berg’, ‘Long Tom’ and Or­nithogalum thyr­soides ‘Chinker­inchee’. The lat­ter is usu­ally spring flow­er­ing but in this gar­den it flow­ers in mid­sum­mer. AU­TUMN-FLOW­ER­ING BULBS Ner­ines GRASSES The ma­jor­ity is Aris­tida jun­ci­formis with some Stipa gi­gan­tea. Aris­tidia vis­ually holds the parterre to­gether as it looks good all year, whether in flower or not.
