IT’S TIME FOR AFRICA

Condé Nast House & Garden - - MANIFESTO -

No, you don’t need two weeks in Portugal. This year we’re packing for a visa-free vaycay.

There’s as much history, great food and Instagram-worthy architecture right here as anywhere else: 1. For the adventurous there’s Erta Ale, an anything-but-dormant volcano in Ethiopia. 2. About 30 kilometres northeast of Dakar, Lake Retba is sure to rack up the likes with its salty pink waters (it’s got the same buoyancy as the Dead Sea, too). 3. There’s more to Morocco than the souks of Marrakech. Take a detour via Chefchaouen and experience the blue-washed walls of this ancient mountain city. 4. In Maputo book yourself a two-hour guided tour of Portuguese eclectic modernist architect Pancho Guedes’s (he was to Mozambique what Bawa was to Sri Lanka) many idiosyncratic structures around the country’s capital.
