a garage converted into a chic living space is a master class in savvy, compact design

‘There is no shortage of small spaces you can live in that have a bed, a bathroom and a lounge. But I think this one is di erent. You feel abundance. You feel light pouring in, you feel novelty, and you feel luxury.’

Condé Nast House & Garden - - CONTENTS - Silvio Rech

the size of a large garage, is the sum total of space in this mini pavilion in Johannesburg, designed by architects silvio rech and Lesley carstens, creators of some of the world’s most remarkable lodges and resorts. The secret, perhaps, is their understanding of architecture as experience, and the notion of fun, richness and adventure in their buildings infuses every aspect here. The interior space is arranged around three nuclei: living room, dining and sleeping space, but cleverly and creatively organised so the space never leaves you feeling like there is a wardrobe in the kitchen, or a kitchen in the bedroom.
