What is ‘ colourism’?

‘The no­tion among peo­ple of colour that ide­alises black peo­ple with lighter skin tones. Lo­cally, it’s rooted in apartheid clas­si­fi­ca­tion stan­dards.’

What ’ s NB about colourism, gen­der and beaut y con­vos?

‘So­cial me­dia is ubiq­ui­tous. In these spaces, the ideal of beauty is shift­ing. There’s an ob­ses­sion for black women to show off their light­ness, sex­i­ness and fit­ness. Women need to be­come more con­scious of how these con­ver­sa­tions are shap­ing their per­cep­tion of them­selves.’
