Blessed Girl is speaking on colourism, gender and beauty at the South African Book Fair, on from 8 to 10 September at Museum Africa in Newtown. Southafricanbookfair.co.za
What is ‘ colourism’?
‘The notion among people of colour that idealises black people with lighter skin tones. Locally, it’s rooted in apartheid classification standards.’
What ’ s NB about colourism, gender and beaut y convos?
‘Social media is ubiquitous. In these spaces, the ideal of beauty is shifting. There’s an obsession for black women to show off their lightness, sexiness and fitness. Women need to become more conscious of how these conversations are shaping their perception of themselves.’
Enjoy a tongue-in-cheek approach to the new season with Somerset West’s Cavalli Estate’s latest art exhibition, Lady Garden, celebrating the arrival of spring and ‘the bounty of mother nature in all its guises’. We’re interested to see the interpretations of this theme from talents such as Isabel Mertz and Luami Calitz. On from 10 September to 3 December. Cavallistud.com
