WE ALL know and live by our personal core values. Some of the values include integrity, service before self, accountabi­lity and excellence in all we do.

Now that most town councils, metros and municipali­ties have elected public representa­tives who will serve communitie­s during the next five years, will they uphold these core values in all they do?

The foundation of our core values is “integrity first”.

Webster’s online dictionary defines integrity as “a general competency contributi­ng to maintainin­g the integrity of the organisati­on; displaying high standards of ethical conduct; understand­ing the impact of violating these standards on the organisati­on, self, and others”.

Critical to this definition is maintainin­g ethical standards and this starts with personal accountabi­lity. Simply put, you must be true to yourself before you can be true to others or an organisati­on.
