Bay a Bea­con of light in the mixed dou­bles league

THE 2017 East London mixed dou­bles league has run its course.

Bea­con Bay emerged as the strong­est club in the league with their A side win­ning the first league and the B team fin­ish­ing run­ners-up.

Bea­con Bay A topped the log with a full-house of 33 points, fol­lowed by Bea­con Bay B on 21. Old Boys fol­lowed with nine points and Destiny seven. The two Old Boys teams were head and shoul­ders above the other teams in the sec­ond league and, as ex­pected, con­tested the fi­nal play­off. Old Boys A tri­umphed 11-0.

Justin Sparg and Lorna Grotjohn beat Dean Peters and Wendy Makowem 6-3, 6-4 be­fore be­ing ex­tended to a tiebreaker in the first set by Don Em­slie and An­drea Vi­aene. They won 7-6, 6-1.

Oliver Ci­ganek and Jilda Man­son dropped only two games all af­ter­noon.

Gonu­bie A de­feated Destiny to gain third place, while Bea­con Bay took fifth po­si­tion via a walkover against Stir­ling A. Stir­ling B fin­ished sev­enth when Gonu­bie B were un­able to take the court. Fi­nal logs: 1st league: Bea­con Bay A 33, Bea­con Bay B 21, Old Boys 9, Destiny 7
