-

THE University of Venda, Thohoyandou in Limpopo, will today confer an honorary doctorate in Law on Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, the Presidency has said.

Spokesman, Ronnie Mamoepa, said yesterday that the council and the senate of the university had agreed to confer the honorary doc- torate on Ramaphosa for “his role in overseeing the drafting of South Africa’s first democratic constitution”.

Ramaphosa previously served as a chancellor of the University of Venda from 1997 until 2009.

He also served as the University of Venda’s special ambassador when he launched a successful R1 billion capital projects campaign for infrastructural development at the institution.

Ramaphosa is a graduate of law from the University of South Africa (Unisa).

He enrolled at Unisa after his expulsion from the University of the North (Turfloop) for political activism. – ANA
