Three par­ties to bat­tle it out in by-elec­tion

MU­NIC­I­PAL ward by-elec­tions will be held in Ward 7 in the Ga­m­a­gara Mu­nic­i­pal­ity next week.

The by-elec­tions in the Prov­ince are among three tak­ing place on Wed­nes­day, the other two be­ing in Gaut­eng and the West­ern Cape.

The ward will be con­tested by Kag­isho Matthews Man­goakwe of the ANC, Hen­drik Jo­hannes Fourie of the DA and Okaile Daniel Tl­hopile of the EFF.

The ward was pre­vi­ously rep­re­sented by the DA and be­came va­cant as a re­sult of the death of the coun­cil­lor.

Spokesper­son for the Elec­toral Com­mis­sion, Kate Bapela, said yes­ter­day that the voter turn-out for this ward in the 2016 mu­nic­i­pal elec­tions was 69.43 per­cent. “The DA can­di­date won the ward with 46.76 per­cent of valid votes.”

The elec­tions in Gaut­eng is for the Mid­vaal Mu­nic­i­pal­ity, which was also pre­vi­ously rep­re­sented by the DA, and the one in the West­ern Cape is for the City of Cape Town. This ward was pre­vi­ously rep­re­sented by the ANC, who won it with 77.6 per­cent of the votes.

In the pre­vi­ous round of by-elec­tions, held last week Wed­nes­day, the ANC ex­pe­ri­enced a dip in sup­port in Ward 1 in Ma­gareng (War­ren­ton) but still main­tained the ma­jor­ity of votes with 60 per­cent (71 per­cent in 2016). The EFF al­most dou­bled its sup­port from 19 per­cent to 37 per­cent, while the Fo­rum 4 Ser­vice De­liv­ery (F4SD) ob­tained three per­cent (com­pared to five per­cent pre­vi­ously) of the votes.
