STAFF from the Northern Cape Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison will be staging daily pickets in front of the provincial offices in Lennox Street this week, while a full-blown strike looms.

This comes after workers accused MEC Pauline Williams, along with the senior management of the department, of contravening the Employee Performance Management Development (EPMDS) Policy by withholding their bonuses.

Speaking on behalf of the workers, Tshepo Thebe said during the lunchtime picket on Friday that employees at the department would be staging similar protests every day in the build-up to their protected strike on Monday next week.

“We have taken the necessary steps and will embark on a protected strike from Monday, October 2,” Thebe said. “We have been lobbying Cosatu to assist us in completely shutting down the department.

“The united workers of the department are humbly appealing to the employer to assist us in avoiding any further industrial action as this will hamper service delivery to the community.”
