Pro­test­ers set mu­nic­i­pal of­fice alight

THE SOL Plaatje Mu­nic­i­pal­ity has con­demned the set­ting alight of the One-Stop Ser­vice Cen­tre in Green­point.

The build­ing was par­tially burnt dur­ing vi­o­lent ser­vice de­liv­ery protests yes­ter­day.

Mu­nic­i­pal spokesper­son, Sello Mat­sie, said that thou­sands of rand worth of dam­age was caused to the build­ing.

“The premises were also set alight pre­vi­ously but did not burn down com­pletely. The of­fice will now have to close its doors pend­ing ren­o­va­tions. Luck­ily no­body was at the of­fice at the time of the in­ci­dent as tem­po­rary staff mem­bers are em­ployed at the cen­tre,” said Mat­sie.

He added that com­mu­nity mem­bers would now have to travel to the civic cen­tre to pay their mu­nic­i­pal bills.

“We urge com­mu­nity mem­bers to make use of mer­chants to buy elec­tric­ity. They will, how­ever, now have to pay their ac­counts at the civic cen­tre.”

Po­lice spokesper­son, Cap­tain Ser­gio Kock, said that the po­lice were in­ves­ti­gat­ing the in­ci­dent.

“Po­lice are in­ves­ti­gat­ing an ar­son in­ci­dent af­ter a por­tion of the mu­nic­i­pal of­fice build­ing in Dutch Re­form Street in Green­point was burnt down yes­ter­day morn­ing at 7am.

No ar­rest has been ef­fected yet but any­one with in­for­ma­tion can call De­tec­tive Cap­tain Shoes Sibase on 082 495 4646,” said Kock.
