Free wi-fi hot spots for city

Diamond Fields Advertiser - - NEWS -

FREE wi-fi hot spots in various parts of the city could be on the cards for Kimberley.

The Sol Plaatje Municipality received an application recently from a resident in Gemdene to lease various premises to establish free public wi-fi hot spots.

“These hot spots will help combat the high unemployment rate, encourage businesses, increase tourism, boost e-commerce and narrow the digital gap.”

According to the application, the company involved, Greenleaf Connect, will be responsible for the establishment and maintenance of the hot spots.

The applicant has applied to lease the high rise poles, rooftops, and/or infrastructure on the following municipal properties: Queens Park, City Hall, Kutwanong Park (Club 2000), Roodepan Public Swimming Pool, Galeshewe Taxi Rank (CBD), Mayibuye Uprising Memorial, Vergenoeg Taxi Rank, Kimberley Information Centre and Hulana Park.

The ICT Department of the Municipality has indicated that it has no objections to the request on the condition that it not interfere with the municipality’s wireless network.

A valuation of R2 125 per month for tower masts and R1 700 a month for high rise poles has been determined by the municipality.

The applicant will also need to obtain an approval letter from the SA Civil Aviation Authority prior to any development taking place.

The matter will be discussed at the next Spelum meeting of the Sol Plaatje Municipality.
