What are the trails like? The mountain trail is a rocky track that takes you up a hill and back down. It takes about 2 hours to complete. The old quarry is a combination of dirt tracks and muddy obstacles after good rain. You can choose which obstacles to drive, and if you don’t like the look of any one, you simply choose another path. The obstacle course is also a combination of different types of obstacles. You’ll encounter steep hills, dongas, mud and axle twisters. Do I need a 4x4? You can drive the dirt tracks around the quarry in a 4x2 with a rear diff-lock, but for the mountain trail and the obstacle course you need a 4x4 with rear diff-lock and proper off-road tyres (Highway Terrains, in other words, won’t cut it). The obstacle course is for experienced drivers and the owners suggest that you don’t try to drive it alone either, keeping to a minimum of two vehicles (with recovery gear). Where can we stay? Heidelberg 4x4 has a number of bush camps where you can camp in simplicity away from the world. What else can we do? There’s a picnic area with braai facilities and lots of shade, a jungle gym, small pool, shaded picnic tables overlooking the quarry and ablution facilities for day visitors. You can also ride your motorcycle or mountain bike on the farm, or go for a hike. Costs: R200 per vehicle and R30 per person inside it, R40 per person if you only come for a picnic or hike. Camping costs R100 per person. Contact: Henry Dewitt 072 142 9685, hedwitt@gmail.com.
