Rietfontei­n S33.52218, E23.72596 Rietfontei­n is better known as the Makkedaat Caves, the self-catering units built into caves on the farm. One of the caves, the Alwynbak, is situated on the farm’s 4x4 route and is only accessible in a 4x4. Both the cave and route have spectacula­r views. You can choose to only do the first 8 km and turn back or do a longer circle route of about 25 km. The longest route, the 78 km long Rus en Vrede route, is a particular­ly beautiful drive that leads you south out of the valley and eventually leads to Kareedouw.
