WHAT IS THE PROSTATE?
The prostate is a gland that forms part of the male reproductive system. When healthy, it’s about the size and shape of a walnut and anything much larger is a sign something is wrong.
It’s found between the pubic bone and rectum and surrounds the upper part of the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the bladder).
The prostate produces part of the seminal fluid, which helps transport sperm out of the man’s body during ejaculation.
Men over the age of 50 should go for an annual prostate check-up, while men with a family history of prostate cancer should go for an annual check-up from the age of 40.
