ABOUT BOKO HARAM

DRUM - - News - SOURCES: BBC, CNN, NEW YORK TIMES, THE ECONOMIST

This extremist militant Islamist group, founded in 2002, promotes a strict version of Islam law which forbids Muslims to take part in any activity associated with Western society – such as voting in elections, wearing shirts and trousers or receiving a secular education. It launched military operations in 2009 to create an Islamic state and in 2013 it was declared a terrorist group by the USA. Most of its territory has been recaptured by Nigerian military, but millions of people have been displaced in the ongoing conflict in Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
