Professional dancer, choreographer, teacher, fitness instructor, model and Actor, Charlie Van rooyen gives his talents a special platform in his life. The 27 year old has appeared on various television shows such as the “So You Think You Can Dance” on SABC1 and a South African reality dance competition television series “Strictly Come Dancing” as a guest choreographer.
As a versatile dancer, Charlie specializes in Contemporary dance, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Ballet, Hip-Hop, Pantsula, Spanish Dance, Latin and many more. With great opportunities having to perform globally in the past 9 years, Charlie has worked with many of the industry’s biggest directors, producers, musicians, choreographers, singers and actors.
He has choreographed dance works for different companies outside South Africa. “I have performed on every Television Award shows and also many live shows in South Africa”, he says. The multi-talented Charlie is currently a Fitness instructor at Switch Playground Lonehill and Go health club in Sandton, South Africa. He is also a brand ambassador for ASICS SA and Evox Nutrition. As a passionate individual, Charlie stepped into starting his own establishment and is now a proud owner of an entertainment company called CVR Productions. We had a few questions for Charlie that we believe that will inspire and empower you about him and here is our chat.
What influences you in the dancing industry?
“Somizi and Lorcia Cooper have always been my biggest influencers. I just love their hustle and respect for the industry as well as the support and advice they have been giving throughout the years regarding my career and personal life. I love them dearly”.
Amongst all the dances that you choreograph, which one is your favourite?
“I am a versatile dancer, which means that I do many different dance styles, but contemporary dance is definitely my favourite because I had formal training for the dance”.
How did you decide to become a choreographer? Or is it something that happened suddenly?
“I have always been a creative being, hence becoming a choreographer was natural for me as I love creating and exploring and that is extremely required by a choreographer”.
What do you think about human body in your job as an instructor?
“As a teacher and fitness instructor work with many different body types and one thing for sure, they are all different. Everyone's body react differently to different things. And what makes a good teacher or instructor is knowing how to work with these different bodies”.
How do you make sure that everything that you do gives the best outcomes?
“Hard work and always wanting to make every project my best work ever”.
According to yourself, how do you define “Talent”?
“Talent can be defined in many different forms and ways. I believe every human being has a unique talent, but every talent needs to be exercised in order to perfect your talent otherwise it means nothing. Some people have mental talents, and others have physical talents”.
Tell us about Enigma.
“Enigma is an international One Man show created, choreographed and performed by myself and was Directed by well know Artistic Director Kevin Lega Jeff from New York”.
You have worked with many well-known individuals, who do you wish to work with in the future?
“I have worked with many local and international artists but I have always dreamed of working with Beyoncé and Celine Dion”.
What advise can you give to someone who has a talent, but is afraid of expressing him/herself due to fear?
“Fear will always be there. And it’s good to have fear. I always allow my fear to motivate me to get what I want. If I am not scared of any journey I take on, then it’s not big enough for me”
What are you currently busy with?
“- I am currently working on a 3 city tour launch for VERSACE store.
- Woking on two other corporate events here in Jo’burg.
- I am still working on going back to the US in April to perform my show “Enigma”
- I am currently working on a new one man show that will hopefully premier end of March.
- I am busy writing a new reality show for DSTV, which I will hopefully get the budget for.
- I still do a lot of fitness events and have daily clients
- I still teach dance at different companies, universities and schools”.
