Two bod­ies re­cov­ered in week­end search op­er­a­tions

EMPANGENI K9 Search and Res­cue mem­bers re­cov­ered two bod­ies at the week­end.

On Satur­day, in what was de­scribed as a tricky and treach­er­ous res­cue, mem­bers nav­i­gated a steep gorge in Ekombe, near Nkandla, to re­cover the body of a 28-yearold man who had been re­ported miss­ing since 15 March.

Ac­cord­ing to King Cetshwayo Clus­ter po­lice spokesper­son, Capt Mbon­geni Md­lalose, the mem­bers were re­quired to ab­seil down the gorge to re­trieve the man’s body.

‘It is un­der­stood that an in­quest docket has been opened and Nkandla SAPS are in­ves­ti­gat­ing the case,’ Md­lalose said.

On Sun­day, Empangeni K9 Search and Res­cue were dis­patched to Klip­fontein Dam in Vry­heid where a lo­cal drowned af­ter fall­ing out of a ca­noe.

The body was re­cov­ered af­ter a three-hour dive oper­a­tion and was handed over to Vry­heid SAPS.

Mean­while, the search for the body of Mx­olisi Mlung­wana (19) who is be­lieved to have drowned at Jab­u­lani beach in St Lu­cia, con­tin­ues.

An oper­a­tion con­ducted by Search and Res­cue mem­bers has to date yielded no pos­i­tive re­sults de­spite an ex­ten­sive land and sea search in the vicin­ity where Mlung­wana had last been seen.

Beach pa­trols were con­ducted at the week­end by lo­cal SAPS mem­bers, in­clud­ing mem­bers of the pub­lic.
