Mysterious fire at vacant Empangeni home
QUESTIONS surround a mysterious fire which almost gutted a home in Gemini Drive in Empangeni on Sunday afternoon.
Members of uMhlathuze Fire Department were called in to douse the flames which had engulfed parts of the home, collapsing a portion of the roof.
A man claiming to look after the house said he had left for ‘two minutes’ and upon returning, saw the house was on fire.
But as far as some neighbours were concerned, the home was vacant.
‘No one has been staying at the house for quite some time.
‘This man says he has been looking after the house and that the homeowner stays somewhere else in Empangeni, but I am not sure of that,’ said a neighbour, who preferred to remain anonymous.
‘There is no electricity at this house and as you can see, some of the windows don’t even have glass. It’s been like this for quite a while.’
While the cause of the fire is not yet known, police have confirmed that a case of arson has been opened.
Empangeni’s Community Policing Forum have previously reported that the issue of vacant houses in town is a major cause of concern as they serve as hideouts for criminals.
Part of the roof of the house was completely destroyed by the fire
