Fairlady - - BOOK CLUB - BY JOHN LE CARRE (Penguin Random House)

Le Carre’s latest is a welcome and long-awaited return to his former Cold War stomping grounds. Featuring many of the characters from his early spy novels, it shows some of them in an altogether new light. At the centre is Peter Guillam – once a youthful disciple of George Smiley – now in semi-retirement in France. He is summoned to London to appear before the much-modernised ‘Service’, to be questioned about an earlier mission. The ‘newly transparent’ service needs a scapegoat, and they have him in their sights. Le Carré fans won’t be disappointed, neither will anyone just looking for a darn good story.
