A stately dame

Fairlady - - FLY FINDS - – Caryn

I’ve always loved the treelined avenues of the old part of Kenilworth in Cape Town, and one house in particular has always stood out for me: Highlands Country House. Built in 1875, she’s a grand old lady and is said to be one of the oldest homes still standing from that era.

I highly recommend treating yourself to lunch or dinner at the homestead. I had a gorgeous three-course meal in the beautiful dining room: the resident chef, Toussaint, prepared confit salmon to start, followed by the most tender rack of lamb I’ve ever had and chocolate fondant for dessert. It’s a real treat. Arrive a bit early and have a drink on the veranda and a wander around the garden – it will take your breath away.

If you’re lucky enough to spend the night, you’ll be spoilt for choice when choosing a room. Some have a private balcony – it’s like stepping back in time. (And if you happen to be of the marrying sort and looking for a venue, this is it!)
