THE ar­ti­cle writ­ten by Jekwa – “The Pig­ment Pre­mium” – is not con­vinc­ing as she does not sub­stan­ti­ate her view on why “black pro­fes­sion­als should earn more than their white coun­ter­parts”.

Apart from stat­ing in the ar­ti­cle that higher salaries for black pro­fes­sion­als are “ac­cept­able and un­der­stand­able un­der the cir­cum­stances” as blacks had to over­come “un­be­liev­able odds” to at­tain a qual­i­fi­ca­tion and there­fore “de­serve a boost”, this state­ment is fun­da­men­tally flawed and seems to have been con­jured up with­out any co­her­ent thought pro­cesses.

The ar­ti­cle fails to cre­ate a bal­anced ar­gu­ment by out­lin­ing the es­sen­tial cri­te­ria of com­pe­tency, ef­fi­ciency, and nei­ther does it state the skills the in­cum­bent re­quires to fill
