WHAT HAPPENED| FNB CANCELLED its R20m anti-crime campaign that included the distribution of 2,8m pamphlets with attached pre-paid envelopes addressed to President Thabo Mbeki. Reports suggest that the decision to cancel was taken after FNB buckled under pressure from big business and the Presidency. The decision has turned into a public relations nightmare for the bank.

WHAT THE OTHERS SAID BUSINESS DAY wrote: “To launch a high-profile campaign targeting Mbeki directly, without having a plan in place for the fall-out, was unforgivably naïve, especially since Government is a big FNB client” and “Government’s approach on crime is reminiscent of Mbeki’s attitude when he stalled the report on SA’s peer review to the African Union. Civil society is welcome to get involved – but only on Mbeki’s terms.”
