WHAT HAP­PENED| THE MUCH- pub­li­cised box­ing match be­tween women’s su­per-mid­dleweight world cham­pion Laila Ali, daugh­ter of leg­endary world box­ing cham­pion Muham­mad Ali, and Gwen­dolyn O’Niel at Em­per­ors Palace in Jo­han­nes­burg, re­sulted in a vic­tory for Ali af­ter only 56 sec­onds.

WHAT THE OTH­ERS SAID AN EDI­TO­RIAL in Busi­ness Day en­ti­tled Queen Laila, praised the ath­lete, say­ing: “...there was no deny­ing that Ali de­served her win over Gwen­dolyn O’Niel – in terms of ath­leti­cism and hype.” A Star colum­nist wrote: “O’Niel, you have to be­lieve, knew she was on a hid­ing to noth­ing from when she ar­rived in South Africa. Save for a sur­pris­ing hug she gave Ali at a func­tion, O’Niel looked shifty and ner­vous.”
