WHAT HAPPENED| PRESIDENT Hu Jintao of the People’s Republic of China conducted a two-day visit to South Africa as part of a tour of eight African countries. The visit culminated in the signing of numerous agreements that will increase co-operation between SA and China in various areas including fruit exports, health, minerals and energy and financial aid.

WHAT THE OTHERS SAID AN EDITORIAL in the Daily Dispatch said it was ultimately not about keeping China out of Africa. Rather, it was about what we wanted from China before we opened the door when a giant came knocking. Business Report wrote: “Hu’s current tour shows that the Chinese put their money where their mouth is. Many African countries have benefited from substantial debt relief, credit facilities and investment deals.”
