“THE TIME HAS COME for the regulators and the suppliers of finance to start getting their house in order. The time has also come for the suppliers of finance to stop thinking of themselves as suppliers of finance, because healthcare is largely funded by employers and individuals. “The transformation of the industry has been going on for a long time, and it’s still all about how to make the treatment of the sick more affordable. A change of focus is necessary, that is, away from illness to how to prevent illness and ensure better health. Also how to measure the quality of health and healthcare in SA.

“At the same time, there must be a focus on job creation, so that the taxpayer base can become bigger – an essential ingredient for the type of healthcare system we are heading for,” says Louis Botha, MD of Absa Healthcare Consultants and chairman of the Financial Planning Institute’s (FPI) Healthcare Committee.
