SLIDING IN

Finweek English Edition - - Communication & technology - BENEDICT KELLY

IF YOU’RE A FAN of slider phones, such as the Nokia N80 or the Samsung D900, then the Motorola Motorizr Z3 is a hot contender for your affection. With a slim profile and a snappy slider function, first impressions are favourable. And with a decent camera all the bases seem to be covered.

However, there are a few issues with the phone that are hard to escape. The first is the size of the keypad. Due to its slim profile anyone with larger fingers is sure to struggle a bit with typing both numbers and SMSs. Also, because the phone has a shiny metallic keyboard – something that’s become a trademark of recent phones from Motorola – it’s easy to press the wrong buttons at times.

The phone doesn’t have 3G, rather incorporating EDGE – which means that using the phone for surfing the Internet may not be the most pleasurable experience.

However, voice quality is excellent and it’s hard to stress enough how smooth the slider is, snapping open and shut with a satisfying smack. The screen is nice and bright and battery life is more than adequate.

Just for its all-round performance this phone is a definite winner; and while those looking for more features may want to wait for its big brother, the Z8 – which has just been announced – for the average cellphone user it’s sure to hit the sweet spot.
