Anger over child murder
WHAT HAPPENED A NUMBER OF papers devoted many pages to the disappearance of Sheldean Human of Pretoria and the discovery of her body 15 days later near the Tshwane fresh produce market. Neighbours and police had searched for her uninterruptedly, and virtually the whole country shared its sympathy with the family. Superintendent Piet Byleveld, who solved the Leigh Matthews murder, was called in to assist. THE STAR said the murder of the seven-year-old girl must not only be condemned in the strongest terms, but should also serve as a call to solve other similar cases and bring the murderers to justice. The Pretoria News said that although everyone had been hoping fervently for a happier resolution, the overwhelming public sympathy for the family brought the country together.
