WHAT HAPPENED THE AGGRESSIVE TONE of Arts & Culture Minister Pallo Jordan’s statements in Parliament about the changing of names was criticised, after which the minister said that Jan van Riebeeck also changed the names of places, mountains and rivers without a second thought. The minister said that a lesson in nation building by the DA and others who wish to complain is therefore out of place, because rebuilding is a two-way street. RAPPORT said that Pallo Jordan is a bitter man and that we can forget about nation building while his voice is part of the majority. The newspaper said Jordan should know all about the nature of the negotiated settlement that filled all South Africans with so much hope in the first few years after 1994. Beeld and the Cape Times said the changing of names should be dealt with circumspectly in a country with so much diversity.
