WHAT HAPPENED MORGAN TSVANGIRAI, leader of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) in Zimbabwe, and some of his party members have been arrested and brutally assaulted while in custody. Tsvangirai, whose injuries include head injuries, and members of his group were prevented by the police from attending a prayer day of protest against the country’s worsening crisis. The police also shot one protester. THE STAR said the arrest and violence are further proof President Robert Mugabe would do anything to remain in power. However, it would have been wiser to retire quietly next year, following the example of Sam Nujoma, Ketumile Masire and Joaquim Chissano. Die Burger said it could lead to a civil uprising, a palace revolution or even a military coup. “It’s time for President Mbeki and SA to choose on whose side we are.”
