WHAT HAPPENED| DURBAN’S BEACHFRONT areas were pounded by massive surf, with waves reaching heights of 7m. Lowlying areas on the shore sustained significant damage. The storm forced the closure of the ports at Durban and Richards Bay. Durban handles the greatest volume of seagoing traffic of any port in Africa.

WHAT OTHERS SAID ECONOMIST George Glynos, of Econometrix, was reported as saying that the storm would affect productivity in SA, though it was hard to quantify. KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sibusiso Ndebele said: “On the south coast alone it’s estimated that damage to mainly Government infrastructure – including roads and amenities at the beaches – runs into almost half a billion rand.”
