WHAT HAPPENED SOUTH AFRICA’S LOTTO WHEEL stopped spinning after Trade & Industry Minister Mandisi Mpahlwa announced that all draws must stop until the issue of the new operator is resolved. Mpahlwa waited until the last moment of the contract period of Uthingo, the previous contractor, before making the announcement. Judge Willie Seriti ruled early last month that preferred bidder Gidani’s licence was invalid.

WHAT OTHERS SAID DIE BURGER said that if Mpahlwa had been an MD of a private company, he would have been given the order of the boot for poor management long ago. “But as South Africans have learned over the past decade, inefficiency is no hurdle to advancement in politics.” The Citizen said that it might look like an April fool’s stunt but it certainly wasn’t one: it was simply an expensive Government faux pas.
