Top cop’s red light for 2010

WHAT HAP­PENED PO­LICE COM­MIS­SIONER Jackie Selebi pro­posed to Par­lia­ment that pros­ti­tu­tion and pub­lic drink­ing be le­galised when SA hosts the 2010 Soc­cer World Cup. Selebi has called for 2010 host cities to pro­vide ded­i­cated “red light” dis­tricts in an ef­fort to con­trol and mon­i­tor pros­ti­tu­tion dur­ing the tour­na­ment.

WHAT OTH­ERS SAID THE CIT­I­ZEN said: “…our laws ap­ply to ev­ery cit­i­zen and ev­ery­one who vis­its this coun­try. They can’t be re­laxed for one oc­ca­sion. We can’t go any softer on crime.” The Mer­cury com­mented: “Com­mon sense dic­tates that polic­ing will need to be di­rected as fully as pos­si­ble at forms of crim­i­nal­ity that pose a dan­ger to the event and to vis­i­tors and cit­i­zens alike.”
