Top cop’s red light for 2010
WHAT HAPPENED POLICE COMMISSIONER Jackie Selebi proposed to Parliament that prostitution and public drinking be legalised when SA hosts the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Selebi has called for 2010 host cities to provide dedicated “red light” districts in an effort to control and monitor prostitution during the tournament.
WHAT OTHERS SAID THE CITIZEN said: “…our laws apply to every citizen and everyone who visits this country. They can’t be relaxed for one occasion. We can’t go any softer on crime.” The Mercury commented: “Common sense dictates that policing will need to be directed as fully as possible at forms of criminality that pose a danger to the event and to visitors and citizens alike.”
