WHAT HAP­PENED TWENTY-THREE-YEAR-OLD Vir­ginia Tech stu­dent Cho Se­ung-Hui killed two stu­dents in a dorm and then, two hours later, shot and killed 30 more in class­rooms be­fore killing him­self. A fur­ther 15 stu­dents were in­jured. With a death toll of 33 the in­ci­dent has claimed its place in US his­tory as its worst shoot­ing ram­page to date. THE STAR said: “Though South African schools also have a his­tory of vi­o­lence we thank­fully haven’t reached the scale seen at places of learn­ing in the US.” The New York Times re­ported: “Vir­ginia Tech... is an­other hor­ri­fy­ing re­minder that some of the gravest dan­gers Amer­i­cans face come from killers at home armed with guns that are fright­en­ingly easy to ob­tain… What’s needed, ur­gently, is stronger con­trols over lethal weapons.”
