WHAT HAPPENED AFTER ACCUSATIONS of bingeing and carrying the inauspicious label of “chokers”, South Africa’s Proteas silenced critics by demolishing England to win a spot in the semi-finals of the Cricket World Cup by nine wickets. Captain Graeme Smith led the charge with 89 runs off 59 balls and Man of the Match Andrew Hall claimed five wickets for a mere 18 runs. THE STAR said: “It’s both a peculiarity and a strength of South African teams that they seem to perform best in the face of adversity.” The Citizen reported: “Any lingering negative sentiments have been blown away by this resounding victory. Do it again, please, against Australia next week. And if you need to relax and blow steam before the big semi-final, go ahead.”
