Zim na­tion­als over­seas de­nied vot­ing rights

WHAT HAP­PENED ZIM­BABWE’S AU­THOR­I­TIES ruled that they wouldn’t ex­tend the right to vote in next year’s pres­i­den­tial elec­tion to mil­lions of its cit­i­zens liv­ing over­seas. The Zim­bab­wean Elec­toral Com­mis­sion said that only those over­seas on of­fi­cial gov­ern­ment busi­ness would be al­lowed to vote. Around 4m Zim­bab­weans are liv­ing in South Africa and Bri­tain. A COLUM­NIST in The Star wrote: “Mu­gabe’s strat­egy is ob­vi­ous. It’s a crude at­tempt to crip­ple the op­po­si­tion… so it will be un­able to mount a co­her­ent elec­tion chal­lenge.” A colum­nist in The Cit­i­zen said: “We should en­sure that all of the mil­lion plus Zim­bab­wean refugees in SA and those in other coun­tries are en­fran­chised and al­lowed to vote in the com­ing elec­tion…”
