Too much of a good thing

Finweek English Edition - - Main stories this week -

WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE EASTER weekend over and another long weekend ahead, several newspapers are asking whether the time hasn’t come to take another look at the number of holidays in SA during the year, as more people die on the roads at those times and it also harms the economy. SA has 12 public holidays/year, but people increasingly extend their breaks when a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday. DIE BURGER said there are even calls for more religious holidays for other religious groups. No reasonable person would dispute the fairness of that, the paper said, but most people would probably also agree that we must avoid that so as not to have even more holidays. Volksblad said it would be a good idea to drop the custom of making the Monday a day off when a holiday falls on a Sunday.
