WHAT TAXPAYERS GIVE
THIS FINANCIAL YEAR the public purse will sponsor political parties to the tune of R83 864 769.
That will be divided proportionally (90% on the basis of seats held) and equitably (10%, divided equally among parties). For many smaller parties it’s their major source of funds.
IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi says this money is a drop in the ocean compared with what the parties spend collectively. That’s especially true in an election year.
For example, during the 2004 election campaign political parties spent 80% of their R66m/year allocation between January and April on mainstream media campaigns.
