AFTER A COUPLE OF YEARS OF struggling with declining market share in most of its divisions following the acquisition of rival Compaq in 2002, HP has not only regained the top spot in the global PC market by surpassing Dell last year, but can now also officially be called the biggest IT company in the world.

With revenues expected to top US$100bn (R710bn) in 2007 it has already overtaken IBM. The $4,5bn acquisition of Mercury in 2006 makes HP the sixth largest software company in the world, and its networking division ProCurve has moved from number five to second spot globally in five years.
