WHAT HAPPENED THE MEDIA were fairly sceptical about ANC party president Jacob Zuma’s plans to provide compulsory and free education to all South Africans. A great deal was also written about his visit to a squatter camp for impoverished whites in Pretoria, where he said nobody may be excluded from the aid provided by Government to the poor – regardless of whether they’re white or black. BEELD warned that the ANC – and especially Zuma – was switching into “election mode” and that it was traditional for politicians to promise all kinds of things. Die Burger said Zuma was already getting into the habit of making promises and creating expectations he wouldn’t be able to keep. The Witness said it must be remembered Zuma still faces a court hearing and it was up to the courts to decide whether he was guilty or innocent.
