WHAT HAPPENED THE LAND CLAIMS COMMISSION, which has twice postponed the finalisation date for SA’s 79 000 land claims, has indicated the finalisation of the 4 949 outstanding claims could continue for another five years. Agricultural organisation TAU SA said 8 311 claims/year had so far been finalised and that another five years meant only 990/year, thereby opening the door to corruption. BUSINESS DAY called it a land claims mess, with the commission again referring to many factors responsible for the delay and not itself. It’s clear that a large part of Government’s land reform policy is being poorly applied or is unsuitable, the paper said. Beeld said a “land Codesa” was urgently needed. The Citizen warned that consumers’ current food hardships were merely being exacerbated.
