Zimflation and other tales

Finweek English Edition - - Letters -

WHAT HAPPENED ZIMBABWE just can’t keep out of the news. During the past week it was the turn of the country’s inflation, which had increased to 11,2m% – the highest ever. About 80% of Zimbabwe’s people are now living in poverty. Meanwhile, the talks between political leaders Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai have once again bogged down, despite the involvement of SA and other intermediaries. THE STAR said this is Zimbabwe’s “critical hour” and that the negotiators should make the 84-year-old Mugabe realise the game is over. Business Day said Mugabe must give up power and nothing else must be acceptable to the SADC. The Sunday Times said President Thabo Mbeki, the SADC and the African Union must ensure that, as Botswana stated clearly, Mugabe doesn’t become president again.
